The Lagos State Government has urged residents to minimise noise pollution during the festive period and beyond, emphasising the importance of safeguarding public health and maintaining environmental sustainability.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, and the General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Dr Babatunde Ajayi, highlighted proactive measures to address excessive noise.
“The Lagos State Government is committed to a zero-tolerance policy on noise pollution, particularly during the Yuletide season and beyond. The government has put proactive measures to curb excessive noise and safeguard public health.
“We acknowledged that the festive season brings heightened celebrations and activities that often lead to increased noise levels.
“But we have to prioritise the health and well-being of Lagos residents by reducing noise pollution,” Wahab said.
He added that to enforce noise regulations, the government has set up a Special Task Force on Noise Pollution under LASEPA.
The task force includes members of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps and will be responsible for monitoring, arresting, and prosecuting violators.
Wahab stressed that unregulated noise poses serious health and environmental risks, which the government is determined to eliminate.
Establishments such as worship centres, nightclubs, lounges, and bars must obtain permits from LASEPA for public events involving amplified sound.
These venues are also required to operate in soundproofed and enclosed spaces to protect residents in surrounding areas.
The commissioner revealed plans for a public awareness campaign starting in January 2025 to educate residents on acceptable noise levels and the advantages of a quieter environment.
Collaboration with stakeholders, including religious organisations, business owners, entertainers, and event planners, will be prioritised, according to Wahab.
“Plans are also in place to recognise and reward individuals and organisations that demonstrate exceptional compliance with noise regulations, fostering a culture of responsibility and sustainability,” Wahab assured.
He commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Dr Obafemi Hamzat for their leadership in promoting environmental sustainability and a healthier Lagos.
Wahab called on Lagosians to support the government’s initiative for a peaceful and noiseless state, expressing appreciation to the press for their efforts in raising public awareness.
