The long-awaited hearing into Manchester City’s alleged breaches of Premier League rules has concluded, with a verdict not expected until 2025.
Reports on Monday revealed that closing arguments were presented to an independent panel last Friday, bringing the months-long legal proceedings to a close.
The case, which began on September 16 at London’s International Dispute Resolution Centre, involves 115 charges filed by the Premier League against Manchester City.
These include 80 alleged breaches of financial regulations between 2009 and 2018, as well as 35 charges of failing to cooperate with the league’s investigation.
City, who deny any wrongdoing, could face significant sanctions if found guilty. Possible penalties range from fines to relegation from the Premier League.
However, any decision is likely to face appeals, further prolonging the legal battle.
The Premier League accuses Manchester City of providing inaccurate financial information over nearly a decade, including overstating sponsorship revenues and misrepresenting salary details of players and managers.
The investigation also highlights alleged breaches of UEFA financial rules during the same period.
Since Sheikh Mansour’s 2008 takeover, the club has won eight Premier League titles, including four consecutive championships, and their first UEFA
Champions League trophy in 2023. Despite their success, the allegations have loomed over the club, with rival fans frequently referencing the charges.
This case represents one of the most significant financial investigations in Premier League history.
Unlike recent cases involving Everton and Nottingham Forest, which resulted in points deductions, Manchester City’s charges span a more extensive timeline and include accusations of systemic misconduct.
The Premier League filed the charges in February 2023, five years after launching its investigation. The delayed verdict reflects the complexity of the allegations and the legal arguments presented.
Amid the legal proceedings, City’s performance on the pitch has faltered, with just one win in their last nine games across all competitions.
Manager Pep Guardiola will aim to steer the team back to form while the club navigates this unprecedented off-field challenge.
The hearing’s conclusion marks a significant step forward in the case, but with appeals anticipated, the final outcome remains uncertain.
