Nigeria Adopts Framework To Reduce Carbon Emissions

The National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) and the Stakeholder Democracy Network (SDN) have begun implementing Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) systems in order to address carbon emissions in Nigeria.

The Director-General of the NCCC, Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe disclosed the implementation during a workshop in Abuja.

The workshop was on the implementation of the MRV for Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCPs).

She explained that as a global methane champion, Nigeria has prioritised reducing methane emissions.

She said methane is a potent greenhouse gas classified as a short-lived climate pollutant (SLCP).

Maduekwe said Nigeriaโ€™s focus on the oil and gas, agriculture, and waste sectors to achieve this goal as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria.

She said, โ€œWe know that if you do not measure something, you are not able to know what it is you need to do.

โ€œMonitoring, reporting, and verification are crucial for identifying how much methane we have been able to reduce as a country.

โ€œWhen we talk about short-lived climate pollutants, we are addressing something that directly affects human health. These pollutants, though short-lived in the atmosphere, have a devastating impact compared to carbon dioxide.โ€
