The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, has directed the deployment of 28,300 special tactical operatives nationwide.
A statement on Friday by CSC Afolabi Babawale, NSCDC National Public Relations Officer, said the additional measure aims to enhance the provision of adequate security and protection of critical national assets and infrastructure across states during the festive Yuletide season.
Audi noted the NSCDC’s commitment to safeguarding vital government utilities against vandals and economic saboteurs.
He expressed concern over the growing activities of individuals engaged in illegal dealings, including petroleum product theft, illegal mining, vandalism of electrical installations, and destruction of telecommunication and railway equipment.
Addressing zonal and state commandant, the CG said: “The NSCDC is the lead agency in the protection of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure across the federation, and this statutory mandate must not be compromised. All hands must be on deck as we approach the festive season, criminal elements may attempt to exploit the period for unlawful activities.
“I charge you to brighten your Eagle eyes and reinvigorate your Intelligence tactics as this would make you more proactive than reactive,” he said.
The operatives, he said, were drawn from specialised units including Crack Squads, Special Forces, Intelligence, Antivandal, and Operations, and have been strategically assigned to monitor identified flashpoints.
They include recreational centers, religious gatherings, motor parks, amusement parks, shopping malls and other areas.
The CG assured Nigerians of a hitch-free Christmas and New Year celebration, noting that the NSCDC would work in collaboration with other security agencies to prevent criminal activities and maintain public order.
He urged citizens to support the Corps by providing credible intelligence to facilitate the arrest of potential threats.
Audi congratulated Christians on the celebration of Christ’s birth, and reaffirmed the NSCDC’s dedication to ensuring a safe and peaceful festive period.
