The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Anambra State has issued a stern warning to youths about the dangers of pursuing instant wealth without regard for the consequences.
The warning was made on Tuesday in Awka during a press conference organized by the National Orientation Agency as part of a nationwide campaign to raise awareness on security issues and combat the ‘Get-Rich-Quick’ syndrome.
Represented by Okadigbo Edwin, the Head of Media and Tactical at the NSCDC, the state commandant, Maku Olatunde, explained that the surge in criminal activities, including kidnapping, ritual killings, and other heinous acts, was directly linked to the societal obsession with rapid financial success.
He stressed that this obsession was fueling the breakdown of law and order, as individuals increasingly prioritize material wealth over ethical values.
Olatunde pointed out that the relentless pursuit of wealth at any cost had led many youths to abandon education and legitimate career paths, turning to crime, including kidnapping, cyber fraud (commonly known as “yahoo yahoo”), and other illegal activities.
“In a society where materialism and the desire to belong to the elite class reigns, crime rates escalate, and social vices become widespread,” Olatunde remarked.
He also emphasized that while financial success is a legitimate goal, it should not come at the expense of moral principles, hard work, and integrity.
The NSCDC commandant called on parents to take an active role in guiding their children, urging them to provide proper orientation and steer them away from the temptation of quick wealth.
He further encouraged the youth to focus on legitimate avenues for wealth creation, emphasizing the importance of long-term success achieved through ethical means.
Olatunde also reassured the public that security agencies, including the NSCDC, remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of lives and property.
He urged community members to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities, stressing that public cooperation would significantly aid efforts to curb criminality and restore law and order.
