The Ogun State government has launched a groundbreaking initiative to empower automotive craftsmen across its three senatorial districts with cutting-edge skills and modern technology in automotive mechatronics.
This transformative training, conducted in partnership with the World Bank-funded Ogun State Economic Transformation Project (OGSTEP), marked its first phase with the participation of 40 automotive artisans.
According to the state government, the initiative is a strategic move to bolster the capacity and competitiveness of artisans in the local automotive industry.
A key highlight of the program is the conversion of vehicle engines from petrol to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). This aspect encompasses the design and installation of CNG fuel systems, adhering strictly to global safety standards and codes.
During a practical session in Abeokuta, OGSTEP Skills Sector Project Manager, Mr. Fatai Osunsanya, revealed that the training program, which commenced three months ago, was tailored to equip participants with advanced techniques and knowledge in auto maintenance.
The goal, he noted, was to modernize the traditional apprenticeship system while expanding its accessibility and relevance.
The comprehensive curriculum covered auto-mechatronics, auto-electrical systems, CNG conversion, digital literacy, adult literacy, and health and safety practices.
Mr. Osunsanya further disclosed that the participants were carefully selected from various mechanic clusters across the state, ensuring a diverse representation in this pilot phase.
The Lead Facilitator, Mr. Osokoya Babatunde, emphasized that the CNG training was not designed to replace petrol usage but to provide a sustainable alternative for vehicle owners.
He urged participants to apply their newly acquired skills effectively in their day-to-day operations.
Representing the trainees, Mr. Haruna Akinfenwa from Abeokuta South Local Government and Mr. Sulaimon Oyekanmi from Sagamu Local Government expressed profound gratitude to the program’s organizers.
They pledged to extend the knowledge gained to others within their clusters, ensuring the program’s ripple effect across the state.
