Operators of the Otakikpo Oil Mining Lease-11 (OML-11) in Ikuru Town, Andoni Local Government Area, Rivers State, have called on the local community to safeguard the oilfield from attacks and destruction.
Green Energy International Limited and Lekoil and Gas Investment Limited Joint Venture manage the field.
During the unveiling of several community projects, including the renovation of the Community Secondary School and the flag-off of the Ikuru Town Water Project, the Chairman of Green Energy, Prof. Anthony Adegbulugbe, represented by Jonah Oke, made the appeal.
“These projects are possible because of the Otakikpo field, which is a vital national asset. It is our collective responsibility to protect it,” said Adegbulugbe.
The oilfield generates the necessary funds for community development, benefiting Ikuru Town and its surroundings.
He further emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and unity in the community, urging residents to avoid violent actions that could disrupt the ongoing developments.
The Chairman of the Host Community Development Trust (HCDT) Board of Trustees, Prof. Lysias Gilbert, also commended the joint venture for its commitment to the community’s well-being.
He highlighted the use of the 3% allocation from the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) to fund the projects, ensuring transparency in the disbursement of funds.
In addition to physical infrastructure improvements, the joint venture has supported capacity-building initiatives for HCDT members, including collaboration with the New Nigeria Foundation, a community development consultancy.
While expressing appreciation for the renovations at the school, the Vice Principal (Admin), Mrs. Mercy Felix, and the Junior Secondary Principal, Mr. Athanasius Solomon, called for additional support, including the construction of a library, staff quarters, and ICT facilities.
As the community celebrates the successful projects, the appeal to protect the Otakikpo Oilfield serves as a reminder of the ongoing responsibility to safeguard its role in funding local development.
