Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has lamented the deaths of over 105 Nigerians in recent stampedes during food and cash distribution events, attributing the tragedies to โpoverty-induced neoliberal economic policiesโ and โcriminal negligence.โ
In a statement released on Sunday, Falana, who chairs the Alliance on Surviving COVID-19 and Beyond (ASCAB), described the incidents as a โnational shame.โ
He said, โThe victims were not just statistics but human beings driven to desperation by systemic poverty and the gross incompetence of those entrusted with their safety.โ
For instance, the most recent tragedies on December 21, 2024, saw 12 deaths and 32 injuries in Okija, Anambra State, during a rice distribution by a philanthropist.
On the same day, a stampede at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, Abuja, claimed 10 lives, including children, as over 3,000 people scrambled for palliatives.
Similarly, just two days earlier, 35 children tragically lost their lives at a Christmas funfair held at Islamic High School, Basorun, Ibadan, Oyo State.
Falana remarked, โThe loss of these innocent lives is heart-wrenching. It underscores the indignity that poverty imposes on our people.โ
Moreover, Falana highlighted previous tragedies, including nine deaths during a palliative distribution in Sokoto in April 2024 and seven fatalities in Bauchi during a cash gift event in March 2024.
He also referenced the devastating May 2022 stampede in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where 30 people died.
In addition to recounting these incidents, Falana criticised the elite for their approach to aid distribution.
โNo member of the elite invites others to lunch by throwing the food,โ he said, condemning what he described as โclass prejudiceโ in how aid is delivered.
Consequently, the ASCAB announced plans to mobilise lawyers to pursue civil suits against organisers of these events.
โWe will ensure survivors and families of the deceased are adequately compensated,โ Falana said. โThose responsible for these avoidable tragedies must be held accountable.โ
To prevent further loss of life, he urged the government to act decisively. โEnough is enough!โ he declared.
โThese events reflect the harsh realities of inequality in our nation and the urgent need for systemic reforms to protect the dignity and lives of our citizens.โ
