David Coote, a 42-year-old Premier League referee, has been dismissed from his role by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) following a thorough investigation into his conduct.
The decision comes after serious allegations were made against Coote, including derogatory comments about Liverpool FC and its former manager Jurgen Klopp, as well as a disturbing set of images published in the media.
The controversy began on 11 November when Coote was suspended pending investigation after a video surfaced on social media that allegedly showed him making disrespectful remarks about Liverpool and Klopp.
The footage, which quickly gained attention, prompted a swift response from the PGMOL, leading to an official suspension while further inquiries were conducted.
Two days later, new allegations emerged after the Sun newspaper published images reportedly taken during this summer’s European Championship.
The photos appear to show Coote engaging in questionable behavior, with one depicting him allegedly sniffing a white powder through a rolled-up US banknote.
The publication of these images intensified the scrutiny surrounding Coote, prompting a second investigation.
PGMOL has confirmed that Coote’s actions were deemed to have breached the terms of his employment contract, rendering his position “untenable.”
While the authenticity of the video and photographs has not been independently verified by BBC or other major outlets, the revelations have been enough for the refereeing body to terminate his employment.
