THE controversy surrounding the University of Abuja’s selection of a substantive vice-chancellor took a new turn today, as professors protested the school’s selection process on campus.
A troubling incident unfolded during the protest, where security personnel violently confronted the Channels Television crew.
Footage from the incident shows security personnel pulling the Channels Television crew from their vehicle and interrogating them about their presence on campus.
The situation intensified as the crew’s bus was vandalized, resulting in substantial damage.
As if that weren’t enough, the security operatives detained the crew for over an hour.
The University of Abuja is currently engulfed in a major crisis over the process of appointing a new vice-chancellor following the departure of Professor Abdul Rasheed Na’Allah on July 1.
Central to the conflict are allegations that the new governing council, in collusion with certain staff members, is attempting to impose Professor Aisha Maikudi as the new vice-chancellor, despite claims that she does not meet the stipulated criteria.
