Senate President Godswill Akpabio has officially declared the Edo Central Senatorial seat vacant following Senator Monday Okpebholo’s election as Governor of Edo State.
Akpabio also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organize a by-election promptly to ensure continued representation for the constituency.
The announcement was made during a valedictory session held in honor of Senator Okpebholo at the Senate chambers.
In his farewell address, Okpebholo expressed gratitude to his colleagues for their support and camaraderie throughout his tenure.
Reflecting on his time in the 10th Senate, which began in June 2023, Okpebholo described his legislative experience as a critical stepping stone toward his new role as governor.
“There is no way my story can be told without my distinguished colleagues here. The support, advice, and prayers were awesome,” Okpebholo remarked.
He extended special thanks to Senate President Akpabio for his encouragement during his gubernatorial campaign, as well as to Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin and Senate Majority Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele for their counsel and unwavering support.
Okpebholo emphasized how his legislative background would shape his approach to governance, particularly in areas like infrastructure, security, education, and health.
“This is homecoming for me,” he said.
“The warm relationship among us here in the chambers cannot be overemphasized. My involvement in the business of legislation has helped to drive my passion for good governance.”
Senate President Akpabio commended Okpebholo for his contributions to the Senate and urged him to maintain his dedication to public service as governor.
The declaration of a vacant seat underscores the Senate’s commitment to ensuring that no constituency is left without representation. INEC is expected to announce a schedule for the by-election in the coming weeks.
