The Nigerian Senate has reiterated its commitment to advancing the Tax Reform Bills, dismissing claims of suspension or withdrawal in the legislative process.
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, addressing plenary on Thursday, emphasized the Senate’s resolve to represent Nigerians’ interests without succumbing to external pressures.
“The Senate cannot be bullied,” Akpabio declared. “Any reform that we are convinced serves the interest of Nigerians will proceed. These bills contain provisions that are in the best interest of the public.”
Akpabio’s comments followed a point of order raised by Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, who criticized misinformation circulating on social media and urged Nigerians to focus on facts.
“We have not suspended or withdrawn deliberations on the tax reform bills,” Bamidele affirmed. “Any attempt to intimidate the Senate is undemocratic. These bills are executive communications, and only the executive arm can withdraw them. We remain steadfast in our legislative responsibilities.”
Special Committee Formed to Address Contentious Issues
To address public concerns, the Senate has established a special committee chaired by Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South). The committee will engage with the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, to resolve contentious aspects of the bills.
Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, who presided over Wednesday’s plenary, emphasized that the executive arm concurs on the need to address disagreements in the bills.
The Senate plans to conduct extensive public hearings and consultations with stakeholders, including governors, religious leaders, and business representatives.
“If six weeks are insufficient, we will extend the time,” Akpabio stated. “We are committed to transparency and addressing all concerns.”
Background of the Bills
The Tax Reform Bills, submitted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in October, have faced stiff opposition, particularly from Northern regions. Despite the controversy, the Senate remains determined to review the proposals thoroughly and ensure they align with national interests.
