A former senator representing Kaduna Central has issued a stern warning about the perils of misusing social media, emphasizing the rising legal consequences of derogatory remarks made online.
In a cautionary post shared on his verified Facebook page on the 15th of December, 2024, Senator Sani urged social media users to exercise caution and accountability in their interactions.
He wrote: “If you are using social media these days, just keep a lawyer close to you or make sure that you have evidence for anything you post or comment on.
“If you have to call someone a bastard or call a lady a prostitute, just make sure you have the evidence to prove your claim.”
Highlighting the growing trend of libel and defamation cases, he added: “The number of people taken to court for libel or defamation is growing nowadays. And the lawyers will charge you so high before making an appearance in your defense. A stitch in time saves nine.”
The senator’s remarks serve as a sobering reminder of the consequences of reckless online behavior in an era where the cost of careless words can be alarmingly high.
