Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has dismissed claims that he threatened President Bola Tinubu, clarifying that his remarks were critiques of government policies he deemed harmful to Nigerians.
The Presidency had urged Mohammed to retract his statement, “We will show President Tinubu our true colour,” which it described as divisive and unstatesmanlike.
Speaking at a Christmas event with the Christian community, Mohammed criticised Tinubu’s tax reforms, arguing they negatively impact northern Nigeria.
“If you ignore the cries of the people, you are inviting anarchy. These reforms are not helping northern Nigeria,” he said.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, Mohammed maintained his comments were a cautionary appeal for fair and inclusive reforms, not a threat.
“It is mischievous to take Governor Bala Mohammed’s honest advice about the dangers of implementing unfavorable policies as a threat to the Presidency,” the statement read.
“The Governor deeply respects the institution of the Presidency and would never engage in threats or hostility.”
Mohammed also reaffirmed his dedication to working with the Federal Government to address pressing national issues.
“We urge the Federal Government to prioritise dialogue and inclusivity over selective criticism and divisive rhetoric.
“Governor Bala Mohammed remains committed to collaborating with the Presidency to address national challenges and ensure Nigeria’s overall growth and development.”
