President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Monday, extended his condolences to the American government and people over the passing of their 39th President, Jimmy Carter, who died on Sunday, aged 100.
Carter, who celebrated his centenary birthday in October, died peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, his organisation, The Carter Center, announced.
He rose to prominence as a Democrat and served as president from 1977 to 1981, before dedicating his life to public service, humanitarian advocacy, and global recognition, earning him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
A statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, the president’s aide on information and strategy, said Tinubu described him as a global statesman who dedicated himself to world peace and humanitarian work.
He said, “As a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and global statesman, President Carter devoted his post-presidential life to the causes of peace, democracy, and the eradication of tropical diseases. His unwavering commitment to these noble pursuits has left an indelible mark on the world.
“President Carter showed us all how to remain relevant and impactful after leaving the esteemed position of President of the United States,” remarked President Tinubu.
“He tackled the challenges the developing world faced, from combating diseases to mediating conflicts and promoting democratic values. He exemplified grace, dignity, and a profound respect for humanity,” he added.
According to Onanuga, President Tinubu described President Carter as a trustworthy and compassionate friend to Nigeria.
He recalled the contributions of President Carter in strengthening the ties between Nigeria the United States, particularly his historic three-day visit to Nigeria in March 1978.
“Under Carter’s leadership, this visit marked a pivotal moment in U.S. foreign policy. It laid the groundwork for a pragmatic relationship between the United States and Africa, with Nigeria at its heart,” he said.
Tinubu expressed hope that Carter’s legacy both in and out of office, will continue to inspire Americans and leaders worldwide to embrace the true essence of leadership.
