Woman, Children Escape Death As Drunk Driver Crashes Car Into Bedroom

A woman and her children narrowly escaped death on Sunday at the Mobile Quarters area of Dutse, the Jigawa State capital, when a vehicle veered off the road and rammed into a residential building, which sparked a fire that engulfed four houses.

According to reports, a Toyota Corolla, with registration number NSR 120 BC, crashed into the living room where the family was asleep. However, the woman and her children narrowly escaped unharmed.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Jigawa State Command, DSP Shiโ€™isu Adam, who confirmed the incident, described it as a near-tragic event that occurred at about 12:30 a.m. on Elpies Street, Mobile Quarters.

DSP Adam disclosed that the vehicle was being recklessly driven by Abdullahi Abubakar Sadiq, 41, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

He said the vehicleโ€™s owner, Muhammad Galadima, 32, had handed the car keys to Sadiq despite his admission of being unable to drive.

โ€œInformation was received that one Muhammad Galadima, 32, and Abdullahi Abubakar Sadiq, 41, both of the same address, suspected to be under the influence of alcohol, dangerously drove a Toyota Corolla with registration number NSR 120 BC,โ€ Adam stated.

โ€œAs a result of their reckless actions, both the vehicle and the entire house were engulfed in flames, which affected three other neighbouring houses that were also burnt to ashes,โ€ Adam explained.

The PPRO further said prompt response from the authorities and residents helped avert further tragedy.

โ€œOn receiving the report, our team, alongside firefighters and good Samaritans, rushed to the scene. The fire was contained, and no lives were lost,โ€ the PPRO said.

He noted that preliminary investigations revealed that the crash and subsequent fire were caused by reckless behavior, noting that both Galadima and Sadiq have been arrested, and the vehicle has been impounded.

DSP Adam assured the public of a thorough investigation and appropriate prosecution of the suspects.

โ€œWe will ensure that justice is served, and those responsible for this incident are held accountable,โ€ Adam assured.

The police also appealed to residents to report any suspicious or reckless behavior on the roads.

โ€œDrivers must exercise caution and responsibility, especially during festive seasons when the risk of accidents is heightened,โ€ DSP Adam urged.

The Jigawa Police Command commended the bravery and quick action of firefighters and community members who helped mitigate the damage. โ€œ

โ€œThe Police will continue to work tirelessly to prevent incidents like this from occurring and to bring perpetrators to justice.

โ€œTheir selflessness saved lives and prevented further destruction,โ€ Adam added.
