Nineteen suspects have been arrested in connection with the recent cult clash in Owo Local Government Area (LGA) of Ondo State, which reportedly claimed four lives.
The state’s Commissioner of Police, Afolabi, disclosed this during a press briefing on Tuesday at the police headquarters in Akure, the state capital.
His remarks followed an on-the-spot assessment of the crime scene in Owo town, where the clash prompted Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to impose a dawn-to-dusk curfew on Monday.
Afolabi assured the public that efforts are underway to apprehend other individuals involved in the violence.
He stressed that the suspects in custody would face prosecution, adding, “Investigations are ongoing to determine their level of involvement in the incident.”
The affected areas—Eyin Ogbe, Iselu, Ijebu Owo, and the palace vicinity—have reportedly returned to normalcy following police interventions.
Afolabi attributed the violence to the proliferation of firearms in the wrong hands, vowing to intensify efforts to disarm unauthorized persons.
“Life is precious, and we will ensure justice is served over the Owo matter,” he said. “We will work assiduously to remove firearms from unauthorized possession and make Ondo State safe and conducive for all.”
He issued a stern warning to criminals and miscreants to steer clear of the state, emphasizing the command’s zero tolerance for crime and indiscipline.
Outlining his agenda, Afolabi promised a focus on professionalism, intelligence gathering, effective investigations, and respect for human rights.
He also pledged to foster a community safety partnership to involve residents in crime prevention strategies.
“There will be a peace safety partnership where both the poor and the rich can meet quarterly to discuss security issues affecting their communities,” he announced.
The commissioner reiterated his commitment to eradicating crime while cautioning officers against indiscipline, laziness, and any unprofessional conduct, including attempts to influence postings through traditional rulers.
As investigations continue, the Ondo State Police Command is calling for public cooperation in maintaining peace and security across the state.
