The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed confidence in producing more state governors and reclaiming governance at the federal level in the 2027 elections.
This was disclosed during a visit by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to Governor Douye Diri at his residence in Sampou, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, according to a statement issued by Daniel Alabrah, Chief Press Secretary to the Bayelsa Governor.
Speaking on behalf of the NWC, PDP National Treasurer Ahmed Yayare attributed the party’s optimism to widespread public dissatisfaction with the current economic hardships.
He said, “Nothing stops the PDP from producing the president and vice president in 2027. The cry of hunger and poverty is too much in the land. The 36 states of Nigeria are yearning for the return of PDP.
“The APC cannot go out to campaign because they will be stoned. Nigeria is in your hands. We need your support to salvage Nigeria.”
Yayare emphasised that the PDP remains the only viable opposition capable of displacing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and warned that democracy in Nigeria could be at risk if the PDP fails to win in 2027.
The National Secretary of the PDP, Ude Okoye, echoed similar sentiments, stating that the NWC was committed to repositioning the party and offering Nigerians a credible alternative for quality leadership.
He commended Governor Diri for his exemplary leadership and developmental strides in Bayelsa.
Governor Diri, in his response, called for unity among party members, stressing the need for internal cohesion to strengthen the PDP’s position as the primary opposition.
“As governors, we need to work closely together. We need to do what is right without minding whose ox is gored. If PDP dies in our hands, posterity will not forgive us,” he said.
Diri also urged members to avoid actions that could divide the party.
“If anybody is bigger than the party, the person can leave. It is PDP that has made most of us.
“We cannot be in PDP in the daytime and at night be in another party. We need to do in-house cleansing,” he added.
The governor expressed support for forming a strong political coalition, with the PDP taking a leading role to reclaim power and address Nigeria’s challenges.
He assured the party of his unwavering support and called on fellow governors to prioritise the party’s unity and strength.
The visit also served as an opportunity for the NWC to commiserate with Governor Diri over the recent deaths of Deputy Inspector General of Police Moses Jituboh (retd.) and Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Elizabeth Bidei.
