The National Boundary Commission (NBC) has called for peaceful coexistence between border communities in Abia and Cross River states following violent clashes over a boundary dispute.
Tensions escalated between the Isu community in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia and the Ukwa Mbiabong Ukwa Eburutu community in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River on January 4 and 5.
The clashes resulted in multiple fatalities.
In a statement on Thursday, NBC Director-General Adamu Adaji condemned the violence, describing it as “unacceptable.”
The statement, signed by the commission’s Head of Public Relations, Efe Ovuakporie, also expressed condolences to the affected communities.
Adaji urged stakeholders to remain calm and avoid actions that could derail ongoing boundary resolution efforts.
He highlighted the NBC’s proactive measures, including a Joint Meeting of Officials held in Calabar on December 11, 2024, where the deputy governors of Abia and Cross River reaffirmed their commitment to a peaceful resolution.
“The steps included the agreement to share the disputed triangular land between Okon-Aku and Ikun communities, subject to approval by the Deputy Governors of both states,” Adaji explained.
He also outlined plans to address other disputed points, including a Joint Technical Meeting scheduled for January 20 in Abuja.
Key measures include the submission of documents supporting claims over disputed areas and the formation of a Joint Committee to rehabilitate displaced communities.
Adaji reiterated the NBC’s neutral role, committed to fairness and sustainable peace.
“Dialogue, not violence, is the path to development and resolution,” he said, urging traditional rulers, community leaders, and security agencies to support peace efforts.
As preparations for the January 20 meeting continue, Adaji appealed for patience, expressing optimism that the NBC’s approach, including accurate surveying and equitable solutions, would bring a lasting resolution to the Abia-Cross River boundary dispute.
“I am confident that these efforts will pave the way for stability and development in the region,” he said.
