Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has approved the recruitment of an additional 1,000 Amotekun personnel to strengthen security across the state and warned that Ogun will not serve as a safe haven for criminals.
Speaking on Saturday during the passing-out parade ceremony of 690 Batch D trainees of the Amotekun Corps at the Gateway International Stadium, Sagamu, the governor pledged to provide more patrol vehicles, electric motorcycles, communication gadgets, and other essential tools to enhance the Corps’ operations.
Abiodun noted that the establishment of the Corps aims to bolster grassroots security and reduce unemployment in the state.
“Based on your level of preparedness and commitment, I am approving the recruitment of another 1,000 Amotekun Corps personnel, bringing the total strength to over 2,000,” he said. “We will also provide additional logistics, including vehicles and electric motorcycles, to enable you to discharge your responsibilities effectively.”
The governor lauded the trainees’ discipline and readiness, stating that their deployment to patrol major roads and communities would significantly enhance the state’s security. He emphasized that Amotekun’s mandate is to complement federal security efforts while collaborating with other agencies to combat crime effectively.
Abiodun cautioned the newly inducted Corps members against using their positions to intimidate or harass residents, urging them to prioritize intelligence gathering and community collaboration through traditional rulers for effective policing.
“This training serves as a clear warning to criminals that Ogun State will not tolerate their activities. I expect to see noticeable improvements in security in the coming days,” the governor added.
He commended the pioneer Commander of the Corps for laying a solid foundation and called on citizens to support the agency by providing actionable intelligence to preempt crimes.
In his address, the Commandant of the Amotekun Corps, Brig. Gen. Alade Adedigba (rtd), outlined the trainees’ preparation, including physical training, weapon handling, and intelligence gathering. He praised the government for its continued support, highlighting the repair of patrol vehicles and the provision of new uniforms and communication gadgets.
Adedigba urged the operatives to uphold the law and collaborate with other security agencies to ensure peace in Ogun State.
The event featured prize presentations to teams that excelled in football, tug-of-war, and cultural displays, marking the occasion as a celebration of progress in strengthening the state’s security framework.
