The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) announced that troops of Operation Fansan Yamma neutralized the son of notorious terrorist leader Bello Turji and several of his fighters during a major clearance operation on January 17, 2025.
The operation targeted key areas, including Shinkafi, Kagara, Fakai, Moriki, Maiwa, and Chindo, leading to the destruction of a terrorist logistics base. According to a statement from Major General Edward Buba, the outgoing Director of Media Operations, Turji’s son was killed at Fakai high ground, where the terrorists had established a camp.
During the battle, Turji fled the area, abandoning his son and fighters. The DHQ labeled him a coward for his actions, highlighting his previous taunts against the military. In December 2024, Turji had dared the military to confront him at his hideout after the capture of his associate, Baka Wurgi. The military has vowed to neutralize him in 2025.
The operation also resulted in the rescue of numerous hostages kidnapped by Turji’s group. The DHQ stated that the intense firepower of the troops inflicted significant casualties on the terrorists while dismantling their logistics hub.
In a separate mission, troops targeted another terrorist group led by Idi Mallam in the Zango-Kagara Forest. The operation resulted in the neutralization of three terrorists, the arrest of three suspected collaborators, and the recovery of weapons, including two machine guns and one AK-47 rifle. Additionally, troops recovered 61 stolen cattle and 44 sheep.
The Defence Headquarters reiterated its commitment to eradicating terrorism and ensuring the safety of all Nigerians.
