On the 17th of January, 2025, the Brazilian government announced that Nigeria has officially accepted to join BRICS, the influential multinational bloc of emerging economies.
The Brazil Foreign Ministry, in a statement, revealed that Nigeriaโs inclusion is a significant milestone in deepening global collaboration, especially within the Global South.
This aligns with Brazilโs commitment to advancing reforms in global governance, a priority for the country, especially as it assumes the presidency of BRICS in 2025.
The statement highlighted Nigeriaโs powerful position as Africaโs most populous nation and one of its largest economies, ranking 6th globally.
With shared goals and interests in economic growth and development, Nigeriaโs membership strengthens the blocโs unity.
This makes Nigeria the latest member to join a group that already includes eight other nations primarily from Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Asia.
