On the 17th of January, 2025, the Brazilian government announced that Nigeria has officially accepted to join BRICS, the influential multinational bloc of emerging economies.
The Brazil Foreign Ministry, in a statement, revealed that Nigeria’s inclusion is a significant milestone in deepening global collaboration, especially within the Global South.
This aligns with Brazil’s commitment to advancing reforms in global governance, a priority for the country, especially as it assumes the presidency of BRICS in 2025.
The statement highlighted Nigeria’s powerful position as Africa’s most populous nation and one of its largest economies, ranking 6th globally.
With shared goals and interests in economic growth and development, Nigeria’s membership strengthens the bloc’s unity.
This makes Nigeria the latest member to join a group that already includes eight other nations primarily from Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Asia.
