The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced the postponement of the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, initially scheduled to take place in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The tournament will now be held in August 2025.
CAF cited the ongoing development of infrastructure across the host nations as the primary reason for the postponement.
Despite significant progress in the construction and upgrading of stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other facilities in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, CAF’s Technical and Infrastructure experts, who have been stationed in the host countries, advised that additional time is required to ensure the venues meet the necessary standards for a successful tournament.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the host countries’ leadership in progressing the infrastructure projects.
He thanked Presidents William Ruto of Kenya, Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, and Yoweri Museveni of Uganda for their dedication to improving the necessary facilities.
“I am impressed with the ongoing construction and renovations of football infrastructure in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. I am confident that by August 2025, the stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other facilities will meet the required CAF standards for a successful TotalEnergies CHAN,” Dr. Motsepe said.
The CAF Technical and Infrastructure experts have commended the substantial progress but emphasized the need for more time to ensure the facilities are fully prepared.
The final decision to shift the tournament to August 2025 comes after careful consideration of the work still to be done to meet CAF’s standards.
In light of the postponement, CAF will conduct the Draw for the CHAN 2024 in Nairobi on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at 20:00 Nairobi Time.
Further announcements regarding the specific start date of the tournament in August 2025 will be made in due course.
This delay ensures that the upcoming edition of the TotalEnergies CHAN will be held to the highest standards, delivering a memorable and successful competition for both players and fans across Africa.
