A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday granted bail to Olamide Thomas, who is accused of issuing death threats against Seyi Tinubu, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, on social media.
Justice Emeka Nwite admitted Thomas to a ₦10 million bond with one surety in like sum, ruling that the prosecution had not presented sufficient evidence to suggest she would jump bail.
“I have carefully examined the affidavit evidence of both the defendant and the complainant,” Justice Nwite stated. He added that in the absence of any indication Thomas would interfere with her trial, granting bail was in the interest of justice.
The judge specified that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction, provide a three-year tax clearance certificate, and submit two recent passport photographs alongside an affidavit of means. The surety’s address is also to be verified.
The case was adjourned to 18 February 2025 for trial.
Thomas, who pleaded not guilty to three charges under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2024, was initially arraigned and remanded on 20 December at the Suleja Correctional Centre.
The charges stem from a viral video in which Thomas, speaking in Yoruba, allegedly made threats against the individuals.
In one instance, she was accused of stating, “Mr Seyi Tinubu would die this year, and misfortune and calamity had befallen the Tinubu family,” which, according to the prosecution, was intended to threaten and harass Seyi Tinubu, placing him in fear of death or bodily harm.
Thomas was also accused of threatening IGP Egbetokun and stating in the video that Muyiwa Adejobi would “bury all his children in a single day,” allegedly placing him in fear for his family.
The offences, the prosecution stated, are punishable under Section 24 (2) (a) of the Cybercrimes Act.
Thomas’s lawyer, Seprebofa Oyeghe, represented her in court during Monday’s hearing.
