Cross River Govt Suspends Village Head, Council Over Alleged Misconduct

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has taken decisive action, ordering the immediate suspension of Chief Okon Archibong, the Village Head of Esuk Utan, alongside his council members.

The announcement was made in a statement signed by Mr. Nsa Gil, Chief Press Secretary to the governor, on the 6th of January, 2025, in Calabar.

The suspension stems from allegations of misconduct and abuse of office leveled against the traditional ruler and his council, prompting a flurry of petitions.

In response, Governor Otu directed the Calabar Municipal Traditional Rulers Council to delve into the accusations and submit their findings.

โ€œReports on findings and recommendations should be sent to the office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Chieftaincy Affairs within one week,โ€ the governor instructed.

In the interim, the Obutong Clan Council has been tasked with forming a five-member committee to oversee the affairs of Esuk Utan Village pending the outcome of the investigation.

Otu also urged residents and business operators in Esuk Utan to continue their daily activities without interruption, cautioning them to avoid any dealings with the suspended chief and his council.
