The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the death of one of its officers, Assistant Superintendent of the EFCC (ASE II), Aminu Sahabi Salisu, during a raid in Anambra State. The Commission has vowed to ensure that justice is served.
Over the weekend, news of the officer’s death dominated social media, sparking outrage and debate among Nigerians.
Many condemned the agency, alleging misconduct during the raid, while others criticized internet fraudsters’ growing audacity.
In a statement by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the EFCC expressed grief over the officer’s death and dismissed claims of illegality during the operation.
The Commission emphasized that the raid adhered to proper protocols and was documented at relevant police authorities in Anambra State.
According to the EFCC, Salisu and his team conducted a raid at Dr. J.O. Ukwutinife Close, Ifite, Awka, to apprehend suspected internet fraudsters.
The operation initially went smoothly, with 37 suspects arrested. However, a suspect, Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, allegedly resisted arrest.
Despite identifying themselves and demanding access, Ikechukwu reportedly fired at the officers, killing Salisu and injuring another.
The EFCC disclosed that Ikechukwu is a coder involved in dubious online medical supplies.
Items recovered from his apartment included laptops, iPads, and recording devices, all linking him to fraudulent activities. Ikechukwu is in police custody and will face trial.
The Commission condemned what it described as “irresponsible narratives” on social media, defending its officers’ actions and calling for respect for the slain officer’s family and colleagues.
The EFCC warned of the increasing danger posed by internet fraudsters, who are now involved in armed criminal activities, including kidnapping and ritual killings.
The agency reiterated its commitment to eradicating internet fraud and vowed to respond firmly to any attacks on its officers.
The Commission urged the public to support its efforts to combat corruption and ensure justice for its fallen officer.
