Ex-Governor Kwankwaso Faults FG’s Interference in Kano Affairs
Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State and leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has criticized the Federal Government for what he described as undue interference in Kano’s internal affairs.
He also condemned the Kano State Police Command for issuing a terror alert that, in his view, caused unnecessary fear among residents and disrupted activities in the state.
In a statement shared on his official X handle on Monday, Kwankwaso congratulated the Tijjaniyya Sufi Order for successfully hosting their annual Maulud in honor of Sheikh Ibrahim Inyass at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano.
However, he expressed concern about the timing of the police’s terror alert, which was issued shortly before the event.
“This alert not only jeopardized the success of the gathering but also put the lives of the people of the state at risk by creating palpable fear among the people of Kano, as well as those who came from other countries and parts of Nigeria,” he noted.
Kwankwaso described the alert as a “dangerous misstep,” emphasizing its potential to undermine public trust in future security warnings. “Issuing a threat alert of this magnitude, which later turns out to be false, sets a dangerous precedent. I am afraid it will lead people to become complacent in the event of a genuine threat in the future,” he cautioned.
He further criticized the police leadership in Kano for its handling of the situation, arguing that it projected a negative image of the Nigeria Police Force internationally.
“Due to the international nature of the event, the conduct of the police leadership in Kano also leaves a bad impression of the Nigeria Police Force globally,” he stated.
The senator also urged the Federal Government to respect Kano State’s autonomy and refrain from actions that could be perceived as meddling in its governance.
“For the umpteenth time, I urge the Federal Government to avoid dragging itself into unpleasant situations by further interfering in affairs that are strictly under the jurisdiction of the good people of Kano State and its Government,” he emphasized.
