FCCPC, NCC Sign MoU to Boost Consumer Protection, Fair Competition

Kehinde Fajobi

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance consumer protection and promote fair competition in Nigeriaโ€™s telecommunications sector.

The agreement was formalised on Tuesday at the FCCPC headquarters in Abuja, with key officials from both organisations, including FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman and CEO, Mr Tunji Bello, and NCC Executive Vice Chairman and CEO, Dr Aminu Maida, in attendance.

Bello highlighted the importance of inter-agency cooperation in addressing the complex challenges faced by telecom consumers.

He explained, โ€œThe principle behind overlapping regulations is simple: it serves as a mechanism to prevent issues from slipping through the cracks.

โ€œThis explains the interwoven relationship between the FCCPC and the Nigerian Communications Commission.โ€

Bello also cited Section 105 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act of 2018 as the legal foundation for the collaboration, stating, โ€œBy this, we are also making life easier for the generality of consumers in dealing with two government agencies on the same issue at the same time.โ€

The MoU aims to streamline operations in the telecom sector, minimise regulatory confusion, and create a one-stop solution for both telecom operators and consumers.

โ€œThe signing of this MoU today symbolises the convergence of two diligent government agencies in compliance with legal requirements to eliminate regulatory gaps in the telecoms industry,โ€ Bello added.

Dr Aminu Maida, NCCโ€™s Executive Vice Chairman, described the collaboration as long overdue and essential for advancing consumer welfare and industry transparency.

โ€œThis occasion is one that I would describe as long coming. It is the outcome of healthy engagements and events that have strengthened the resolve of both our institutions to protect the Nigerian consumer, especially in the communications industry,โ€ he said.

He emphasised the telecom sectorโ€™s role as a cornerstone of Nigeriaโ€™s economic and social development, noting, โ€œIn an era of rapid technological advancements, the significance of collaboration between regulatory bodies cannot be overstated.

โ€œThis MoU is a testament to our shared vision of fostering a transparent, competitive, and consumer-focused telecommunications industry.โ€

Bello called on other regulatory agencies to establish similar collaborations with the FCCPC, ensuring coordinated oversight across all sectors.

โ€œWe hope todayโ€™s event will inspire other sector regulators to establish similar collaborative frameworks with the FCCPC, as mandated by Section 105 of the FCCPA,โ€ he said.

Maida expressed optimism about the partnershipโ€™s potential, saying, โ€œI look forward to the great strides we will make together in ensuring fair competition and consumer satisfaction in the years to come.โ€

The agreement is expected to usher in a more inclusive, transparent, and sustainable telecommunications industry in Nigeria.
