The Federal Government has unveiled plans to establish an aircraft manufacturing company in Nigeria, as part of its efforts to boost the country’s aviation sector.
Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, made the announcement during the inauguration of XeJet’s new Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility and flight support center in Abuja.
The initiative aligns with the government’s goal to support local operators and strengthen the aviation industry. Keyamo explained that the new facility is a collaboration between XeJet and local banks, aimed at making Nigeria a regional hub for aviation services.
“We have focused on attracting MRO facilities to Nigeria since we took office,” Keyamo said. “While searching for investors abroad, we’ve now realized that the solution is right here at home, in this collaboration between indigenous operators and local banks.”
He highlighted the inclusion of additional facilities, such as a training center, as a significant achievement. “This development will not only serve Nigeria but will also attract users from across the West African region, positioning the facility as a regional center for excellence,” he added.
XeJet CEO Emmanuel Iza spoke about the company’s broader vision, which includes contributing to aircraft manufacturing, starting with components like wings, landing gears, and tires. “Nigeria has the talent and potential; all we need is the right environment and facilities to make this a reality,” he said.
