Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has issued a compelling eight-week deadline for the Visitation Panel to resolve the long-standing issues fueling the unrest between Sa’adu Zungur University and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The panel has been tasked with uncovering the root causes of the strike, scrutinizing the university’s financial practices, and formulating a plan to establish a more efficient and harmonious management structure.
At the panel’s inauguration, Governor Mohammed highlighted the critical role their work will play in restoring order to the institution, which has been grappling with disruptions to teaching and learning.
He reaffirmed his administration’s belief in education as the cornerstone of development, committing to tackle the sector’s ongoing challenges.
He urged the committee to propose sustainable solutions to the persistent tensions between ASUU, NASU, and the university’s management, despite his previous attempts to intervene.
Prof. Gambo Laraba, the panel’s chairperson, expressed gratitude to the governor for entrusting them with this important task and assured that a comprehensive report would be delivered to guide necessary reforms at the university.
Earlier, ASUU at SAZU had suspended an indefinite strike, which had been triggered by unresolved issues such as the non-implementation of pension and death benefits, unpaid allowances, and the controversial appointment of a polytechnic graduate as bursar, contrary to the university’s founding laws.
This suspension followed Governor Mohammed’s direct engagement with the union in December 2024.
