Gunmen invaded the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC), Eagle Parish in Idiroko, Ogun State, on Sunday, killing Prophet Yomi Adetula during a service.
The attack occurred around 10:30 am at the church on Baggage Road, Odo Eran, in Ipokia Local Government Area.
According to eyewitnesses, three armed men entered the church, fired a shot that brought down the 54-year-old prophet, and used an axe to mangle his head.
Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola confirmed the incident in a statement, saying, “Police officers raced to the scene and found Yomi Adetula, aged 54, lying lifeless in a pool of blood, his white celestial garment stained.
“His body was riddled with bullets, and his head was mangled with an axe to ensure he was really dead.”
Odutola added that the suspects fled into a border area after the attack, and efforts to apprehend them are underway.
“Normalcy has been restored while possible clues will be revealed in the coming days as an investigation has been launched into this very sad occurrence,” she said.
The prophet’s body has been deposited at the General Hospital Morgue in Ilaro as police continue their search for the perpetrators.
