The Executive Chairman of Agatu Local Government, Hon. James Melvin Ejeh, has strongly denied allegations that he invited Fulani herdsmen to graze freely in the area, reaffirming his commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region.
Ejeh made the clarification during his thank-you visit to the Agatu Development Association (ADA) members in Makurdi, Benue State, on Thursday, January 16, 2025. Speaking to the group, he expressed gratitude for their unwavering support during and after his campaign.
“I have come to return thanks to you all for your faith in me and my administration. Once ADA gives you their blessings, you will win your election because the entire Alekwu of Agatu is present here,” he stated.
The Agatu Chairman also briefed the association on the peace-building initiatives his administration has implemented, highlighting the successful results, including a violence-free local government since he assumed office.
Addressing the allegations, Ejeh categorically dismissed the claims, clarifying that no agreement had been signed to allow Fulani herdsmen to occupy any Agatu community. He emphasized that his administration is dedicated to rescuing Agatu from insecurity and fostering peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders.
“We’ll continue collaborating with critical stakeholders to expose criminal elements and restore peace to the area,” Ejeh assured.
In his remarks, Ejeh also shared significant progress in addressing security challenges in Agatu, revealing that his administration had successfully arrested both criminal herdsmen and other perpetrators of violence. Additionally, he promised to remodel the ADA Hall to provide the association with a better venue for their monthly meetings.
The Chairman of the Agatu Development Association, Hon. Matthew Efoga, commended Ejeh for his leadership and efforts to restore peace to Agatu. He encouraged the chairman to remain steadfast in his mission to ensure a secure and peaceful Agatu.
Other stakeholders, including Hon. John Anthony Ikwulono and Dr. Francis Eche Damian, also expressed their appreciation for Ejeh’s efforts and urged him to continue collaborating with key stakeholders to address security concerns in the area.
Ejeh reiterated that his administration remains committed to prioritizing the safety and well-being of Agatu’s residents, vowing to continue working towards the peace and unity of the local government.
