Kano Govt Hails Appeal Court Judgment on Emirate Council Dispute

The Kano State Government has hailed the recent Court of Appeal judgment as a significant victory, expressing satisfaction with the decision that upheld its reforms of traditional institutions and overturned earlier rulings by the Federal High Court regarding the Kano Emirate Council.

In a press conference held at the NUJ Press Centre in Kano on the 11th of January, 2025, top government officials, including the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the Commissioner for Information, and all 44 Local Government Chairmen, jointly addressed the media.

They emphasized the governmentโ€™s unwavering dedication to justice, fairness, and modernizing traditional institutions while safeguarding Kanoโ€™s rich cultural legacy.

The appellate courtโ€™s ruling validated the state governmentโ€™s actions concerning chieftaincy appointments and reforms, affirming them as lawful and constitutional.

Furthermore, it resolved the question of jurisdiction over chieftaincy matters, asserting that the Federal High Court lacked the authority to interfere.

โ€œAll decisions, pronouncements, and orders made by the Federal High Court in Kano have been quashed and set aside by the Court of Appeal,โ€ declared Attorney General Barr. Haruna Isa Dederi on behalf of the government.

โ€œThe law enacted by the Kano State House of Assembly regarding Emirates and all actions taken by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, pursuant to that law, have been fully upheld and legalized by the Court of Appeal.โ€

This landmark judgment fortifies the governmentโ€™s reforms, which aim to ensure equitable representation, foster inclusive governance, and empower traditional institutions for the benefit of all Kano residents.

The government called on individuals, public institutions, and private organizations to respect and implement the Court of Appealโ€™s decision. โ€œWe extend our gratitude to the Judiciary for upholding the principles of justice and fairness,โ€ read an official statement.

โ€œThe Kano State Government remains committed to working harmoniously with traditional institutions to foster development and unity across all emirates.โ€

In a heartfelt appeal for unity, the government urged stakeholders to set aside differences and collaborate in promoting peace, progress, and shared prosperity throughout the state.
