The Niger State government has urged residents of Shiroro Local Government Area to avoid suspected mine-laden areas until the military clears the region.
The warning follows reports of terrorists planting explosive devices in farms along the fringes of Basa.
Commissioner for Homeland Security, Bello Abdullahi, issued the caution in Minna during the 2024 Base Socio-Cultural Activities (BASA) event at the 013 Quick Response Force, Nigerian Air Force Minna.
He emphasized the government’s reliance on the military to secure the affected areas before residents can safely return.
“Locals must restrict their movement to avoid explosions. The military is working to clear the area of mines, but until then, safety is paramount,” Abdullahi stated.
The warning comes amid heightened terrorist and bandit activity in Niger State.
On December 19, 2024, three bomb explosions rocked the Bassa community in Shiroro Local Government, claiming three lives and injuring five others.
Residents fear more explosives may be hidden in the area.
Abdullahi noted that the use of landmines marks an alarming escalation in the tactics employed by terrorists, underscoring the urgency of military operations.
Speaking at the BASA event, Group Captain Austine Idoko, Commander of the 013 Quick Response Force, reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to eradicating banditry and terrorism in Niger State.
“Under the leadership of the Chief of Air Staff, we remain steadfast in our operations to restore peace and security in the region,” Idoko said.
The Base Socio-Cultural Activities (BASA) event serves as an annual celebration marking the end of the operational year for the 013 Quick Response Force.
It showcases the cultural heritage of Air Force personnel while fostering unity among families and the host community.
During the event, families of Air Force personnel expressed gratitude and hope for the safe return of their loved ones serving on the battlefield.
Governor Umaru Bago, represented by Bello Abdullahi at the event, reassured residents of the state’s efforts to address security challenges.
“We are working closely with the military to ensure the safety of all citizens and clear the Shiroro area of threats,” he said.
As military operations continue, residents are urged to remain cautious and report any suspicious activity to authorities.
