The Jigawa State Police Command has confirmed the death of nine people and injuries to four others following a communal clash on Friday in Gululu village, Miga Local Government Area (LGA).
DSP Lawan Shiisu, the Police Public Relations Officer, issued a statement on Saturday in Dutse detailing the incident.
According to Shiisu, the conflict began when villagers in Gululu discovered a shop had been looted, and footprints were traced to a Fulani settlement in Yankunama, Jahun LGA.
“On 03/01/2025, information from Gululu village in Miga LGA indicated that a group of miscreants suspected to be Fulanis broke into a shop and stole a quantity of hibiscus flower and other provisions,” he said.
Shiisu explained that upon confronting the suspects, the Fulani community reportedly attacked the villagers with bows and arrows, injuring four people.
In retaliation, Gululu villagers mobilised and attacked Fulani settlements, setting properties ablaze in both Miga and Jahun LGAs.
A police team responded to the violence, recovering nine bodies that were later confirmed dead at local hospitals.
The Commissioner of Police, Ahmadu Abdullahi, visited the scene with other senior officers and convened a stakeholder meeting.
Attendees included the Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, Haruna Aliyu, council chairmen, district heads, and leaders of Miyetti Allah and vigilante groups from the affected LGAs.
Shiisu said the meeting focused on preventing further violence, propaganda, and reprisal attacks.
“Patrols are being stepped up in the affected areas to maintain law and order. The situation is under control, and an investigation is ongoing to bring the perpetrators to justice,” he stated.
