Ogun Intensifies Battle Against Banditry, Holds Emergency Security Meeting

Segun Ayinde, Abeokuta

In response to the reported influx of bandits into the South-West region, the Ogun State Government has reinforced its security strategies to combat insecurity and protect residents.

The state convened an emergency security meeting, bringing together key stakeholders, including security agencies, community leaders, and government officials, to counter the rising threat of banditry.

A statement by Hon. Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Media & Strategy, emphasized that the state remains in firm control of its security architecture through robust collaboration among security agencies and local security apparatus.

Security Measures Strengthened

Akinmade revealed that part of the stateโ€™s strategy involves deploying armed security guards to protect farmlands and conducting constant security patrols. These measures are aimed at ensuring the safety of farmers and preventing infiltration by criminal elements.

โ€œThe recent reported influx of bandits from the North into the South-West coincided with the recent security meeting of the heads of security agencies in Ogun State,โ€ the statement noted.

โ€œAfter a careful review of the state of security, the agencies resolved to redouble their efforts to sustain the peace and tranquility the state has enjoyed, especially during the festive period.โ€

He further highlighted the stateโ€™s comprehensive approach to tackling insecurity, which includes:

Visible presence of security personnel across the state.

Patrols and manning of key vulnerable points.

Intelligence-led operations.

Community partnerships and inter-agency cooperation.

Call for Vigilance

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements, particularly of unfamiliar individuals in their communities. The government also advised commercial farmers to continue utilizing armed security guards and enhance farm visibility through lighting and security towers.

Regional Cooperation

Akinmade commended the ongoing collaboration between Ogun and Oyo states in sharing intelligence on the movement and operations of suspected bandits.

โ€œWe already have some useful tips for a well-honed agenda to annihilate the bandits should they step into Ogun State,โ€ Akinmade stated.

โ€œAll ethnic groups in Ogun State are united by a common goal to fight any disturbance to the peaceful environment.โ€

Warning Against Harboring Criminals

The government issued a stern warning to individuals providing shelter or support to bandits. โ€œAnyone who procures or provides accommodation for any bandit of any ethnic extraction to operate in Ogun State will face the wrath of the law,โ€ the statement added.

The Ogun State Government reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its residents while maintaining the peace that has characterized the state.
