The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), the leading socio-political organization of the South-South region, has called on all stakeholders in the Rivers State political crisis to fully support the Peace and Reconciliation Committee led by Obong Victor Attah.
The committee was constituted at PANDEF’s General Assembly on October 24, 2024, to mediate and resolve the ongoing political conflict in the state.
In a statement signed by PANDEF National Chairman, Ambassador Godknows Igali, the forum emphasized the need for all parties to set aside their differences and cooperate with the committee to achieve a peaceful resolution. The statement highlighted the caliber of personalities on the committee, describing them as respected leaders who have committed to making personal sacrifices for the sake of peace.
Respected Members of the Peace Committee
The Peace and Reconciliation Committee is composed of distinguished individuals from the South-South region, including:
Obong Victor Attah: Former Governor of Akwa Ibom State and a renowned national leader known for his dedication to peace and development.
Senator Roland Owie: Former Chief Whip of the 4th Senate, with extensive experience in legislative affairs and conflict resolution.
Senator Emmanuel Ibok Essien: Former Chief Whip of the 5th Senate, known for his public service and community development efforts.
Senator Stella Omu: A trailblazer in public administration and women’s empowerment, and former Chief Whip of the Senate.
Col. Peter Asam Mbu Ogar: A decorated military officer and former military governor of Kwara State, with expertise in conflict management.
Admiral John Jonah: Former Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State and a strategic planner with extensive experience in national defense.
Rt. Hon. Stella Dorgu: Former member of the House of Representatives and the committee’s secretary.
Appeal for Restraint
The statement, titled “Political Conflict: PANDEF Reiterates Call for All Parties to Continue Working with the Obong Victor Attah-Led Peace and Reconciliation Committee,” expressed concern over the use of social and electronic media to spread falsehoods and fuel tensions.
“PANDEF notes with concern the recent resort to electronic and social media platforms to cast unfounded aspersions, spread falsehoods, and fuel tensions, all aimed at diverting the focus of this committee and defeating the good purpose behind the peace and reconciliation effort,” the statement read.
The forum urged all stakeholders to exercise restraint, avoid inflammatory actions, and focus on supporting the committee’s efforts.
Call for Unity and Peace
“PANDEF calls on all stakeholders to collaborate fully with the Obong Victor Attah-led Peace and Reconciliation Committee,” the statement added.
“The recent political conflict in Rivers State has been counterproductive and wasteful, and it is imperative to restore peace for the sake of the citizens, the region, and the nation at large.”
PANDEF concluded by emphasizing the importance of unity and collective action, calling on all involved to prioritize the welfare of Rivers State and the Niger Delta region.
