Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has outlined key priorities for the Nationals Assembly in 2025, including the passage of the 2025 Appropriation Bill and the Tax Reforms Bills.
These initiatives, he noted, are central to Nigeria’s economic recovery, fiscal stability, and broadening the tax base.
Delivering his address at the resumption of plenary on Tuesday, after the Christmas and New Year break, Abbas emphasised the House’s commitment to addressing the country’s socio-economic and political challenges.
His speech was presented by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu.
“Our legislative agenda for 2025 prioritises the passage of the Appropriation Bill and the Tax Reform Bills, both of which are pivotal to economic recovery and fiscal stability,” Abbas said.
“These reforms are essential for broadening the tax base, improving compliance, and reducing dependency on external borrowing.
“The House will ensure that these reforms are equitable and considerate of the needs of all Nigerians, particularly the most vulnerable.”
The Speaker also highlighted the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution, noting that it would address critical systemic and foundational issues in Nigeria’s governance.
He praised the work of the Constitutional Review Committee, chaired by the Deputy Speaker, and mentioned that the committee had reviewed over 350 memoranda as part of its extensive consultations.
“The extensive consultations and rigorous review of over 350 memoranda demonstrate the depth of public engagement in shaping our nation’s foundational document,” Abbas stated.
“The outcomes of this process will address longstanding governance challenges and promote inclusivity, equity, and accountability.”
Further, Abbas reaffirmed the House’s commitment to advancing important legislative frameworks related to gender equality, electoral reform, and energy infrastructure.
He stressed the importance of promoting transparency, accountability, and responsiveness in the legislative process, highlighting platforms like the Open Parliament and live ‘State of the House’ chats as critical tools in building public trust.
He also underlined the need for continued collaboration with the Executive arm, saying, “This partnership, built on mutual respect and a common vision, is essential for addressing the complex challenges our nation confronts.”
Abbas urged House members to renew their commitment to service, equity, and progress.
“Nigerians have legitimate expectations, and rightly so,” he said. “Our citizens aspire to a safer, more prosperous nation, where opportunities flourish, and governance reflects the highest standards of integrity and accountability.”
The Speaker concluded by recognising the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes ahead of Armed Forces Remembrance Day, pledging continued support for the welfare of the country’s military personnel.
He said, “Let us work together to ensure that this year stands as a testament to the transformative power of effective governance.”
