Tinubu mourns Enugu tanker explosion victims
President Bola Tinubu, on Sunday, condoled with the government and the people of Enugu State over the fuel tanker explosion, which resulted in the loss of lives on Saturday.
The President also directed traffic control agencies to enforce extra measures to prevent recurring fuel tanker explosions.
Tinubu conveyed his condolences in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, titled ‘President Tinubu mourns victims of fuel tanker explosion, condoles with Enugu State government.’
The fuel tanker reportedly spiraled out of control and burst into flames while navigating the Ugwu-Onyeama section of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.
The Federal Road Safety Corps gave the casualty figure as 11 but other reports said 18 persons died, with several others injured and hospitalised.
The Enugu incident came just days after a similar incident in Niger State claimed over 80 lives.
Tinubu commiserated with the families of the deceased and the injured and prayed for the repose of the souls of the departed and quick recovery for those receiving medical treatment.
The President called for “caution and adherence to safety measures among road users, particularly fuel tanker operators.”
Furthermore, he directed agencies in charge of enforcing traffic rules to implement measures to prevent recurring fuel tanker explosions nationwide.
Also, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, called on relevant agencies of government to prioritise the safety of lives in the event of accidents or occupational hazards.
The Deputy Speaker, in a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Assistant, Print Affairs, Udora Orizu, condoled the families of the Enugu tanker accident victims as well as the government and people of Enugu State, praying to God to grant them the fortitude to bear the loss.
“I’m deeply saddened by the news of a fuel tanker explosion in Enugu State yesterday (Saturday) which caused the death of several people, with many also injured. This horrific incident happened just days after another tanker exploded in Niger State with over 80 people killed.
“I’m deeply concerned that this is one death too many. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families as well as the government and the people of Enugu State.
“I also want to use this opportunity to urge the Federal Government to take immediate action to address the deplorable state of our roads, especially the 9th mile expressway, provide safety measures and educate citizens to help prevent such tragedies in the future. It’s our responsibility to act now and protect ourselves,” Kalu said.
