The Katsina State Police Command has confirmed the killing of 21 people during an attack on Baure village in Safana Local Government Area by gunmen.

In a statement released on Friday, Abubakar Aliyu, the spokesperson for the command, disclosed that the victims were ambushed on Tuesday while returning from a condolence visit. The attack targeted a joint team comprising members of the Katsina State Community See Corps (KSCWC) and local vigilante groups.

โ€œThe incident occurred at about 4:30 p.m., prompting a swift response from police operatives attached to Safana Divisional Headquarters, who rushed to the scene and restored normalcy,โ€ Aliyu said.

โ€œSadly, 21 persons were fatally shot as a result of the attack.โ€

The spokesperson assured the public that efforts were underway to track down and apprehend the attackers. โ€œWe are committed to ensuring justice for the victims, and updates will be provided as investigations progress,โ€ he added.

This latest incident adds to the growing list of violent attacks in Katsina State. In June 2024, 26 people were killed in Gidan Bofa and Dan Nakwabo communities in Kankara LGA. Among the casualties were 15 residents of Gidan Boka village, five in the Dan Nakwabo community, and six security personnel, including four police officers and two members of the KSCWC.
