The Zamfara State Government has lauded the Nigerian military for its intensified campaign against banditry while expressing condolences over civilian casualties during an airstrike in Tungar Kara, Zurmi Local Government Area.
In a statement on Sunday, the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, acknowledged the success of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) operation, which targeted bandits terrorising villages in Zurmi and Maradun LGAs over the weekend.
“We have received multiple positive reports of precision strikes carried out by the Air Component of Operation Fansar Yamma over the weekend in troubled Maradun and Zurmi local government areas,” Idris stated.
The government, however, expressed deep sorrow for the unintended civilian casualties, explaining that local vigilantes were mistakenly identified as fleeing bandits.
“Regrettably, some members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) and local vigilantes were affected during the operation in Tungar Kara, resulting in the loss of lives. We pray to Almighty Allah to grant them Jannah,” the statement added.
Idris assured residents that the Zamfara State Government remains resolute in supporting security forces to sustain the gains against banditry.
“This intervention by the military has significantly degraded the operational capacity of the bandits and shown the commitment of the Nigerian Air Force to protecting civilians and safeguarding lives and property.”
The statement also reaffirmed the state’s commitment to collaborating with security agencies through intelligence sharing, logistics support, and community engagement to achieve lasting peace.
The government extended its condolences to the families of the vigilantes, pledging support for those affected.
“The government will provide necessary support and assistance to the bereaved families,” Idris said.
Residents were urged to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and cooperate with security agencies.
“Through collective effort and unity of purpose, the fight against banditry can be won, bringing enduring peace and stability to Zamfara State,” the statement concluded.
