Atiku Deserves Credit for Economic Reforms – El-Rufai

Nasir El-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna State, has acknowledged the role of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in economic reforms during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration.  

Speaking during a condolence visit to the family of the late elder statesman Edwin Clark, El-Rufai stated that Abubakar played a key role in shaping economic policies, particularly in privatizing national assets.

“Nobody gives Alhaji Atiku Abubakar the credit for economic policy making under the Obasanjo administration. Many of the things we did, we did under his leadership,” El-Rufai said.

He noted that public memory often focuses on negative narratives while overlooking key contributions to governance.

Abubakar served as vice president from 1999 to 2007 and oversaw the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), where El-Rufai was director-general. During this period, several state-owned enterprises were privatized.

El-Rufai’s comments contrast with his past criticisms of Abubakar. In 2016, he accused the former vice president of spreading falsehoods and being haunted by “demons of corruption.”
