BUK Staff Embrace Cycling Amid Economic Hardship
Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has expanded its bicycle loan scheme to assist junior staff in coping with rising transportation costs.
The university announced the initiative on Thursday, stating that it aims to ease commuting expenses for staff.
“In a bid to ease transportation challenges for junior staff, the Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, distributed the second batch of bicycles under the university’s welfare initiative,” the statement read.
During the distribution ceremony, Professor Abbas, assisted by the Chairman of the Bicycle Loan Committee, Professor Mahmoud Umar Sani, and other committee members, emphasized the significance of the initiative in addressing mobility challenges and improving workplace efficiency.
“Highlighting the success of the first batch, Professor Abbas commended the beneficiaries for fulfilling their loan repayments. He further announced that loan deductions for the newly distributed bicycles would commence after the Sallah festival, allowing staff to utilize their salaries for Ramadhan fasting and Eid celebrations,” the statement added.
Beneficiaries described the initiative as timely, given the soaring transportation costs. Many pledged to make good use of the bicycles and expressed appreciation for the support.
In this phase, 47 bicycles were distributed, following the 100 allocated in the first phase.
The initiative comes amid worsening welfare conditions for university staff across Nigeria. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has criticized the government for neglecting education workers, citing poor wages, inadequate funding for tertiary institutions, and declining quality of education.
President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, including the removal of fuel subsidies, have led to soaring transportation and food prices. Inflation has left many workers struggling to afford basic necessities, including daily transport fares.
