Classroom collapse: Four Yobe students discharged from hospital

Four students of Government Girls Science and Technical College, Potiskum, Yobe State, who were hospitalised after some parts of a classroom block collapsed on Thursday, have been discharged.

Saturday PUNCH gathered that only one student, Fatima Adamu, remained under medical care, receiving treatment for spinal shock.

Nurses on duty told our correspondent that Adamu was recovering steadily, with minimal trauma observed from the incident that claimed the life of her classmate and a very close friend.

Adamu’s family members, including her mother and sisters, who were present at the hospital during the visit, commended the hospital management and school authorities for their attention and support for her.

Saturday PUNCH gathered that the classroom collapsed on Thursday when students were assembled for a career guidance lecture by visiting alumni team from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Speaking with our correspondent, the school principal, Adama Abdulkarim, stated that the collapsed classrooms were an old structure renovated between 2009 and 2012.

“The students were waiting to be addressed by the ABU Alumni team when the building suddenly collapsed,” he said.

The principal noted that some classroom buildings were in a state of disrepair due to their age, with a few renovated by the Bank of Industry and National Information Technology Development Agency in 2022.
