Ekiti school marks 70th anniversary

The 70th Founder’s Day Anniversary of Doherty Memorial Grammar School, Ijero-Ekiti, began on Monday with a visit to the Owa Ajero of Ijero-Ekiti, Oba Adebayo Adewole, at his palace.

In a statement issued by the school’s old students association, Oba Adewole reflected on the school’s history, tracing its founding to Princess Ariwoola of the Arojojoye ruling house, who was sold into slavery but later returned to Nigeria as a Christian missionary after marrying Rev. J. Doherty, another missionary.

“The school, he recalled, was named after the couple’s wealthy son who provided funds for the eventual take-off of the school on February 7, 1955,” the statement read.

The President of the Old Students Association Worldwide, Dr Michael Arokodare, thanked Oba Adewole for his historical recollection and sought his blessings for the weeklong anniversary celebrations.
