El-Rufai: North, South-South Must Unite to Save Nigeria 

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, has called for a political alliance between the North and the South-South regions ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying Nigeria needs to be “rescued.”

El-Rufai made the statement during a condolence visit to the family of the late elder statesman and Niger Delta leader, Edwin Clark. He referenced past political alignments and urged a return to that partnership.

“In the 60s, 70s, and 80s, the traditional political partners of the North were the South-South. Let us not forget that. Let us go back to that. Let us save this country because it really requires saving. We need a rescue operation,” El-Rufai said.

The visit, led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, also included comments from El-Rufai on Atiku’s role in economic reforms during the Olusegun Obasanjo administration.

Political observers note El-Rufai’s recent engagements suggest a shift in his political stance following his fallout with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu’s administration. His visit has added to speculation about his next political moves.

Segun Showunmi, a former spokesperson for the Atiku Abubakar campaign, described the meeting as more than a condolence visit.

“We are in a period of strategic political realignments, and conversations like these will shape the future of Nigeria’s leadership,” Showunmi said.

El-Rufai has recently met with politicians across party lines, including Hamza Al-Mustapha, former aide to Sani Abacha, and Shehu Gabam, National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). His recent activities continue to raise questions about his political plans.
