#EndBadGovernance: Nigerian Activists Sue FG Over Protest Crackdown

Six Nigerian activists arrested during the October 1 #EndBadGovernance protests in 2024 have sued the Federal Government, challenging restrictions on peaceful assembly. 

The case, filed under Suit No: FHC/KN/CS/41/2025, is before the Federal High Court, Kano, and is scheduled for hearing on March 6, 2025.

The plaintiffs—Comrade Abdulmajid Yakubu Daudu, Barr. Yusha’u Sani Yankuzo, Barr. Amina Bello, Comrade Anas Ado Ahmad, Comrade Sani Ibrahim Narogo, and Comrade Abdullahi Adamu Mandawari—were arrested on September 30, 2024, by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police in Kano State. They were taken to Abuja, detained for two days, and later released.

According to the Nigeria Patriotic Front Movement (NPFM), which initiated the lawsuit, the case seeks to challenge the suppression of protests.

“We have instituted this action in order to reassert, defend, and advance the rights of Nigerians to peacefully protest without arrest, molestation, and rights violations by the Respondents and their agents,” said Barr. Yusha’u Sani Yankuzo.

The respondents in the suit include the Nigeria Police Force, the Commissioner of Police Kano State, the State Security Service (DSS), and the Director of DSS in Kano State.

The activists argue that restrictions on protests undermine democracy and citizen participation. “We should not allow the present administration to criminalize protest in the country,” Yankuzo added.

NPFM urged public support for the case. “Your solidarity in truth-telling in this case is strongly invited. We must reclaim our rights to peaceful protest before we lose them by default,” the group stated.
