Jigawa’s N6.4bn bridge to boost trade, regional integration — Gov’s aide

The ongoing construction of the N6.4 billion Gwaram Basirka Bridge in Jigawa State is expected to significantly boost trade and enhance connectivity between the North West and North East regions, positioning it as a crucial infrastructure project for economic growth.

Governor Umar Namadi inspected the bridge on Tuesday during a stopover on his way to Gombe State, expressing satisfaction with the progress and reaffirming his administration’s commitment to timely completion.

According to a statement on Thursday by the Senior Special Assistant on Media Affairs, Hajiya Zainab Ringim, the bridge is a strategic investment designed to facilitate the movement of goods and people, unlocking economic opportunities for local businesses and traders.

“With a total cost of N6.4 billion, the project is being executed by local contractor Ojeil Construction Company Limited, while Wuri Associate serves as the consultant,” Ringim stated.

She disclosed that the project is currently at 24% completion, adding that despite challenges posed by the six-month contract duration, the governor remains optimistic about meeting the deadline.

“The Gwaram Basirka Bridge will serve as a major trade route, linking key markets across the North West and North East regions. This will improve access to essential goods and services while fostering economic integration between states,” the statement added.

The project is part of the state government’s broader strategy to enhance infrastructure, with similar initiatives underway to upgrade roads, bridges, and other transport networks.

Namadi emphasised that the bridge would not only ease travel but also attract investment, create job opportunities, and enhance overall economic activities in the region.

Ringim further highlighted the administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability, stating that the governor’s personal oversight reflects his dedication to ensuring that public funds are efficiently utilised.

“As the project progresses, the state government will continue to provide updates, reinforcing its commitment to infrastructural development that directly benefits the people,” she said.

The Gwaram Basirka Bridge is expected to be a game-changer for trade and mobility, strengthening Jigawa’s role as a key economic hub in northern Nigeria.
