JUST IN: FG orders MultiChoice to suspend DStv, GOtv price hike
The federal government through the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has directed MultiChoice Nigeria to suspend its planned subscription price increase for DStv and GOtv pending an ongoing investigation.
According to the FCCPC, the directive remains in effect until the commission concludes its review of the proposed price adjustments.
“This decision follows MultiChoice Nigeria’s request for an extension regarding its scheduled appearance before the commission,” the FCCPC stated.
The commission said it granted the extension but has now rescheduled the investigative hearing for March 6, 2025.
“As a result, MultiChoice must maintain its current pricing structure as of February 27, 2025, until the commission completes its review and issues a final decision,” the FCCPC added, emphasizing that this measure is necessary to prevent consumer exploitation.
MultiChoice is required to appear with all relevant representatives and a comprehensive response to the inquiry.
MultiChoice recently informed subscribers of a planned price revision, with its DStv Premium package set to rise from ₦37,000 to ₦44,500, and Compact Plus increasing from ₦25,000 to ₦30,000. Other adjustments:
The price hike led to the FCCPC summoning MultiChoice to an investigative hearing initially scheduled for February 27, 2025, but now postponed. The commission expects the company to provide a detailed justification for the changes.
