Kano Commissioner Urges Journalists to Prioritize In-Depth Reporting

The Kano State Commissioner for Information, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, has urged journalists to move beyond routine news coverage and focus on producing in-depth and investigative reports.  

Speaking during a meeting with members of the Association of Kano Online Journalists (ASKOJ) at his office on Monday, Waiya highlighted the need for the media to critically analyze policies and hold authorities accountable, rather than limiting their role to reporting government activities.

“When we assumed office, we noticed that the activities of the ministry were often underreported,” he said. “Journalists should not restrict themselves to daily reportage but should explore specialized areas to create a more significant impact.”

Waiya acknowledged the challenges faced by journalists in the state and expressed his willingness to support initiatives aimed at improving media standards. He promised to assist journalists interested in producing well-researched reports and pledged to provide resources for such projects.

“We are prepared to support journalists committed to investigative and special reports. With genuine dedication, we will explore ways to fund such efforts,” he stated.

The commissioner also underscored the importance of professionalism in journalism and announced plans to organize training sessions to enhance journalists’ skills and improve the quality of reporting.

Earlier, ASKOJ chairman Yakubu Salisu congratulated Waiya on his appointment and outlined the association’s objectives, which include promoting unity, objectivity, and professionalism among its members.

Salisu noted that ASKOJ, established in 2020, comprises journalists managing platforms registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
